A GIZ-led consortium supporting coal regions to plan and implement a just transition away from coal, consistent with the Paris Agreement and the ILO Just Transition Guidelines.
Coal built the economies of regions like East Kalimantan and South Sumatra, along with the livelihoods of the workers and communities within them. A transition away from coal cannot be something that happens to these regions. It has to be planned with them.
IKI-JET works inside coal regions of the Global South to build that planning capacity from the ground up. Its method is participatory: regional consultation forums (Forum Konsultasi Daerah, or FKD) bring government, workers, unions, businesses and communities into the same room to shape the pathway away from coal toward low-carbon energy systems.
A transition is only just if the people it affects help design it.
Through social dialogue, gender-responsive policy advice, reskilling and Communities of Practice, the project turns a contested national question into a regional plan with names and numbers attached. What is learned in one region flows to others through the project's Knowledge Hub so that each transition starts further along than the last.
