CANSEA was formed in 1991 and spent nearly three decades as an informal network before becoming a registered institution in 2020. This is how the network grew, from a rotating coordinator role to a full-time Secretariat, an elected Board, and programmes across the region.
Climate Action Network Southeast Asia is formed as the Southeast Asia node of Climate Action Network. Its purpose is to enable organisations concerned about the devastating impacts of climate change to form partnerships, exchange information, strengthen communication and coordinate activities within and beyond national boundaries.
For nearly three decades CANSEA is run as an informal network, managed by a Steering Committee with representation from each member country. It is led by a Regional Coordinator, rotated every two years across the member countries and chosen by the host country.
Member organisations change the model to a full-time Regional Coordinator, enabling continuity and consolidating the progress made.
The change makes it possible to host in-person CANSEA Regional Meetings every year. They have been held annually since, apart from the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.
Following endorsement by its members, CANSEA is formally registered as a legal entity in Malaysia. At the General Assembly that year the network elects its first Board and formally endorses the Regional Coordinator's tenure as the network's Director.
CANSEA joins IKI-JET, a consortium supporting coal regions to plan and implement a just transition away from coal, consistent with the Paris Agreement and the ILO Just Transition Guidelines.
The I-JET partnership with Oxfam advances a people-centred just energy transition across Southeast Asia and the wider ASEAN policy conversation.
CANSEA is a network of 40 organisations across 10 countries. It is a registered institution, an active voice from ASEAN platforms to the UNFCCC, and the Southeast Asia node of the world's largest climate civil-society network.
