Regional cooperation is essential, above all in fast-developing Southeast Asia. It lets organisations confronting the devastating impacts of climate change form partnerships, exchange information, strengthen communication and coordinate action within and beyond national boundaries.
Climate Action Network Southeast Asia (CANSEA) was formed in 1991 to make that cooperation possible. Today it is a network of 40 non-governmental organisations based in 10 countries across Southeast Asia. It is also the regional node of Climate Action Network, the world's largest climate civil-society network, with more than 2,500 member organisations in over 130 countries.
CANSEA also works in partnership with other major networks and dozens of organisations on its core issues: just energy transition, transitioning away from fossil fuels, renewable energy, sustainable energy development, natural resource management, international agreements and climate financing.
To raise climate ambition with climate justice in Southeast Asia.
CANSEA implements this by strengthening the ability of its member organisations to act, through support for advocacy, training, education and awareness, the exchange of information, and expansion of the network.
To strengthen the capacity of the CANSEA national nodes and members to advance climate change work in their respective countries, and to exert positive influence on government policies and positions relevant to climate change.
To contribute to the development of strong regional positions and cooperation on climate change through relevant regional intergovernmental bodies such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and multilateral institutions within the Southeast Asian region.
To facilitate information sharing, knowledge exchange and capacity building among members and other stakeholders.
To be an effective voice of Southeast Asia in developing the Climate Action Network International (CAN) positions as part of the international negotiations on climate change.
To mobilise necessary resources to help national nodes in their work.
These objectives are formalised in the CANSEA Charter.
CANSEA is presently represented in ten countries of Southeast Asia, through the member organisations working in each.
CANSEA is an active network. It implements programmes on just energy transition directly, with member organisations, and with external partners as part of consortia. It is regularly invited to present the region's perspectives at national, regional and global meetings on climate change, and it engages with various platforms of ASEAN.
As the regional node of CAN, CANSEA engages closely with CAN International on governance, strategy development and membership matters. It also serves as a voice for Southeast Asia's positions during preparations for the international negotiations of the climate change convention.
Regular communications
The Secretariat keeps members updated on ongoing developments across the network and the wider climate process.
An annual Regional Meeting
Members come together in person once a year to set the network's direction. The meeting has been held every year since 2019.
Strategy and working groups
Members are involved in developing CANSEA's five-year strategy and lead the network's working groups.
Board elections
The Secretariat facilitates the election of Board members every two years.
Project partnerships
When projects are implemented in a member's host country, members join as partners. Many are now integrated into projects led by CANSEA across the region.
Formed as the Southeast Asia node of Climate Action Network, connecting organisations across the region.
Members move from a rotating coordinator to a full-time role, for continuity.
CANSEA is registered as a legal entity; the General Assembly elects the first Board.
A registered institution and an active regional voice, from ASEAN to the UNFCCC.
